Florida Now Waits For Fate

The Florida Gators have done all they can do. Through twelve games, the only blemish was a 17-9 loss at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs. Florida boasts the number three scoring defense in the nation. They have wins over Texas A&M, LSU, South Carolina, and Florida State, all of whom have been ranked in the top ten in the BCS Rankings.

The Gators will not play for the SEC crown, but they are as deserving as any to play for a national championship. Their schedule is tougher than any of the teams (outside of their SEC counterparts) than any of the other top contenders in the BCS race.

Notre Dame is the only squad that stands in their way. They take on USC tonight with The BCS Championship Game on the line. If the Irish lose, Florida should play the winner of next weeks Alabama vs Georgia SEC Championship. It would set up the second strait BCS Championship between two SEC schools. Many will complain, but shouldn’t. While Oregon and Kansas State can rival the record of the Gators, they can’t come close to matching the strength of schedule. Oregon’s biggest win this year happened tonight against a three loss Oregon State team. K State had their most impressive win come against a two loss Oklahoma team. Florida was beaten by the current number three team in the rankings.

I would look forward to a Alabama or Georgia vs Florida BCS Championship Game much more than Notre Dame against either. Florida can compete with them, hold them defensively, and have a chance at winning. Notre Dame would be a sacrificial lamb against either.

For those who can’t wait until 2014, when the new four team playoff is scheduled to occur, nothing is going to change. Yes, four teams will compete for the national championship. You will still have two of those come from the SEC more often than not. Get used to it.
