Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett was fined $200,000 by his team last week for an “incident” between he and Kerry Rhodes during the fourth quarter of the game against the Jets. The original report was the Dockett spit in Rhodes’ face, but Rhodes later stated that wasn’t the case. What DID happen, was a dispute over game strategy. Rhodes wanted to let the Jets score late, so they could give their offense one last chance to tie the game, and the defensive coordinator agreed. Dockett disagreed, and that led to the on-field incident. My reaction….SERIOUSLY?!?! I understand that most of these players aren’t Mensa presidents, but still, have we really gotten to the point where we are going to have altercations over game strategy? That has to be the stupidest thing I have heard in quite some time.

And now, for the storyline in the NFL that won’t go away. Head injuries. Do you guys remember WR David Boston? He was drafted in 1999 by the Arizona Cardinals, and was a promising young receiver, who had a 2001 season where he put up 98 receptions for 1,598 yards and 8 TDs. He had two other seasons with 70 or more receptions in a 6 year career for the Cardinals, Chargers, and Dolphins. Well, his life has turned for the worst, as he was sentenced to six months in jail for striking a woman. You want to know why he only got six months? The prosecutors wanted more. Why six months? Head injuries.

A psychiatrist testified at the sentencing hearing that Boston had suffered at least four concussions during his football days. We all know how concussions were dealt with in the past, so there is evidence that Boston is suffering from a brain disorder. That is why the judge granted a lesser sentence. My point is not to diminish the terrible nature of his crime, far from it. Any man that strikes a woman is a COWARD. Plain and simple. Real manly to talk with your fists. Just terrible. But I am done with that part of my rant.

My ire here is directed at the league, again, for how poorly they have treated head injuries. David Boston is part of the massive lawsuit against the NFL being brought by retired players due to the head injury issue. The fact that Boston was hurt so badly that his behavior was changed in part due to brain injuries, and the league still doesn’t help these people??!?!?! It’s an abomination! The league wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the players that came before. These people shouldn’t HAVE to sue the league, they should get whatever they need. Period. And it is ridiculous that the NFL thinks otherwise.

School’s out. See you next week.
