After last week’s lecture, we are back to having some attitude. There are these rumors out there that the league is still looking into increasing the field of teams in the playoffs. I wanted to take a look at this idea, and how really stupid it is.

Take your seats, class is in session.

Let’s talk about safety, ladies and gentlemen. What has the league campaigned about, worked, and continued to work with more days without end? Safety! Don’t get wrong, the league has done GREAT work in the field of safety. Whether it has been equipment improvements, or rule changes to protect the players, they have done wonderfully. The concussion protocol will work out well in the long run, as the players start to get used to it. As long as the players are honest, it will work. The flags will eventually bring the problems with hits on the receivers way down. Safety has been worked at, and it has been done well.

So, how are you going to be working the safety angle, if you are having more teams? Adding teams to the playoffs would mean adding games to the playoffs, and that flies in the face of all the league has stood for.

By the way, did you see the Wild Card games this weekend? It’s not exactly like they were games that played straight down the middle, that could have been won by either team. There was more than one that was “one sided”, and just not very pretty to watch. Do we need to add more of that by adding more playoff teams?

Finally, think about the records of teams that make the playoffs now. How many years do we hear about 8-8 teams that either make the playoffs, or had a great chance? All the time. Hell, we had a 7-9 team make the tournament. If you now up the playoff teams, obviously you will need teams to fill the additional spots in the tournament. What will some of those records look like? It’s going to take a lot of fast talking by sportscasters to sell fans on 7-8 teams and 6-9 teams still being in the hunt. It will make it hard to watch. You don’t want half or almost half of the league in the playoffs, otherwise the playoffs mean nothing.

There’s my opinion, agree or disagree in the comments below.
