With Creighton’s 67-64 loss to Wichita State today, one thing is very clear. Creighton needs tougher conference competition if they will ever truly grow as a program.
With conference realignment at an all time high in NCAA football, maybe it is time for basketball powers to make strong moves as well. The Catholic Seven would flourish by adding a Creighton, Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, and others.
If the Catholic Seven come calling, it would allow The Bluejays a grueling conference schedule, and opportunity to go from a mid major king to a powerhouse in college basketball. Far too often, Creighton climbs the national rankings just to fall to the likes of a Boise State or Wichita State. They already have great facilities, a strong fan base, and a solid roster.A lack of consistent competition has held Creighton back from becoming the hoops power they should be.
Playing teams like DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova would strengthen Creighton’s play on a game by game basis, and probably increase the talent of their roster. Doug McDermott is among the nations elite, but imagine what this Creighton team would be able to do with a few more four or five star complimentary pieces around him.
The Missouri Valley has evolved into a nice mid major conference, but onlly Creighton and Wichita State have consistently competed on a national stage. Creighton should be calling the Catholic Seven. If they don’t, it’s a sign that The Bluejays are content being Cinderella, and are not ready the big time.
