2012 Record: 76-86 (4th In NL West)

2013 Season Outlook: The San Diego Padres, just as The Colorado Rockies, will have a tough go in 2013. The team failed to land a quality starting pitcher to add to their rotation. Padres Manager Bud Black has a lot of work to do in finding five starters that will be able to get them through the season.

There are many pitchers to choose from on San Diego’s roster. Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez, Jason Marquis, Casey Kelley, Eric Stultz, Freddy Garcia, Andrew Cashner, and Cory Luebke will all jockey for a spot in The San Diego Padres rotation. While the list lacks a superstar, it has depth.

The most encouraging thing for San Diego in 2013 is their potential at the plate. With  OF Will Venable, 3B Chase Headley. and OF Carlos Quentin as the likely 2-4 hitters, The Padres could put up big offensive numbers. Young players like Cameron Maybin and Jedd Gyorko could also have breakthrough season which would help San Diego’s cause.

The San Diego Padres bullpen will be headlined by closer Houston Street. There are also a full stable of quality relievers that should contribute in 2013, and with a weak starting rotation it will be needed. Look for Luke Gregorson and and Brad Brach to have heavy workloads, and Tommy Lane to see increased innings.

This season looks like a push for The San Diego Padres. We don’t see them being much better or worse than they were in 2012.
