Key Arrivals: IF Tony Abreu
Key Departures :OF Melky Cabrera
The defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants had a quiet offseason compared to their rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants might have fallen behind in the NL West “Arms Race.” While the Dodgers have a solid starting five, Giants manager Bruce Bochy has a great team with quality pitching and a strong lineup. While it lacks some star power, it has a lot of substance and the clubhouse chemistry is great.
The Giants will face tougher competition in the NL West this season, with both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks improving. The X Factor for The San Francisco Giants will be Tim Lincecum. He will need to return to his Cy Young winning self if the Giants want to win their third World Series in four years. With Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner ahead of him in the rotation, Lincecum will need to be that solid third option.
Offensively the Giants look strong. Catcher Buster Posey and 3B Pablo Sandoval headline the group, and the San Francisco also has quality bats in Marco Scutaro, Brandon Belt, and Angel Pegan. If OF Hunter Pence can put together a strong season at the plate, the Giants will have a better chance at once again climbing the MLB mountain.
After looking at San Francisco’s lineup, it’s hard to imagine them falling off much. They are a contender in 2013 for both their division and another World Series. The question is, did they do enough in the offseason to fend off The Los Angeles Dodgers.
